 Private Judo Lessons at FitSync

FitSync offers private, one-to-one judo lessons in Tokyo. Lessons are held at our Shinjuku South (Yoyogi) (coming soon) gym or on-site at your home, office or hotel, and are by appointment only.

This service is for complete beginners and anyone who wants to check the fundamentals one-to-one. We do not practise large or powerful throws or high-impact breakfalls: lessons focus on breakfalls, off-balancing, grips and pins. There are no group classes: every lesson is private, one-to-one with your coach in a fully private room. Your coach is Levente Horváth (1st dan black belt, 20 years of judo, 10 years competitive). Sessions are held in English and simple Japanese, so international residents, travelers and business visitors can book directly.

 Who This Is For
  • Beginners who want to learn judo from the basics
  • Anyone who wants to learn breakfalls and the basic movements one-to-one before joining classes at a dojo
  • BJJ practitioners, wrestlers and other grapplers who want to learn judo grips, off-balancing, pins and basic groundwork
  • Experienced judoka who want to check throw entries (uchikomi) and pins one-to-one
  • Anyone who wants to train in English
  • International residents, travelers and business visitors in Tokyo
  • Clients who want lessons at their home, office or hotel

 What You Learn

Beginners

Basic breakfalls (backward and sideways), basic posture and grips, off-balancing (kuzushi), throw entries (uchikomi — practising the form without completing the throw), pins (kesa-gatame, yoko-shiho-gatame and more) and the habit of tapping early and safely — in that order. No martial arts experience needed.

Experienced judoka

Repetition of grips, off-balancing and throw entries (uchikomi), and technical checks of pins and holds. Tell us what you want to work on and we drill it one-to-one. No large throws and no randori.

Clients can also learn and practise basic groundwork techniques used in judo, including pins, transitions and other fundamental ground techniques.

No large or powerful throws, no high-impact breakfalls and no randori (free practice).

 Mats and Safety
  • The mats at Shinjuku South (Yoyogi) GYM (coming soon) are personal-training mats about 3.5 cm thick. For lessons, an additional mat about 2 cm thick (about 4 cm for some drills) is laid on top.
  • Please follow your instructor’s (staff’s) guidance throughout the lesson.
  • No large or powerful throws, and no high-impact breakfalls.
  • Ground work is trained within a reasonable range, without forcing.
  • Movements on the floor are kept impact-free.
  • Scrapes and injuries caused by forcing movements are at your own risk. Thank you for your understanding.
  • For on-site lessons, we will confirm when you book whether your preferred location is suitable.

 What to Expect

FitSync's private judo lessons start with a conversation: your goals, your judo or grappling experience, your current fitness and any injuries. From there your coach builds the lesson around you, progressing step by step with safety checked at each stage.

  • Goal discussion — learning from scratch, learning breakfalls, checking pins and holds
  • Assessment of your judo or grappling experience and current fitness
  • Technique taught in a safe order, starting with breakfalls, with hands-on coaching
  • Progressive lessons, with clear points to work on before the next session
  • We aim to reply within 24 hours.
  • Cancellations made at least 24 hours before the lesson are free of charge. Cancellations made less than 24 hours before the lesson incur the full lesson fee (100%). The same policy applies to rescheduling.
  • We don't push session packs. Single pay-as-you-go sessions are available.

Choose a location
