The tanden we mean here is a single point of awareness you place just below the navel. It isn’t a fixed muscle or organ, and there is nothing mystical about it.
- A marker for sensing your body’s center of gravity
- A cue for letting go of tension in your shoulders, arms, and whole body
- A reference point for aligning your posture and balance
Using that single point as your guide, you can release unnecessary tension and let your whole body relax.
Among everyday clients, many tell us they find it easier to let go of unnecessary day-to-day tension, and that their posture, the way they walk, and how they begin a movement become smoother.
Among those who play sports, by making the tanden the starting point of movement — ‘0 (zero)’ — many tell us that their ability to maintain balance improves, and that the speed of their first move, how they use their own body, how they transmit force, and how they read an opponent’s center of gravity all change.
Watching top-class performers across many fields — martial arts, various sports, dance, the traditional Japanese performing arts — we noticed that almost all of them use this movement of the tanden, and the ‘speed of returning to 0 (zero),’ naturally and unconsciously.
When it comes to how quickly someone develops in their sport or other discipline, might this ‘tanden’ be an important factor?
Learning this skill is both the goal and the starting line of the ‘Relaxed Tanden’ you’ll be taught at FitSync.
At FitSync, beyond learning through the movements of kickboxing, we help you make the tanden your own while staying close to the movements each person needs right now — whether the movements of your own sport or familiar everyday actions.
The tanden isn’t something you master overnight, but so that even those with no exercise background can take as direct a path to it as possible, we run our sessions with clear explanations drawing on biomechanics, neuroscience, and physics.
